Forget the sandbox. Some parents and grandparents are taking backyard play to a whole new level. They’ve built custom wonderlands, with mini golf courses and even movie theaters.

Tree House Some parents think outside the box for this backyard classic. A Seattle dad built a rocket-ship-themed tree house from Boeing surplus materials. When completed, his son’s “low-altitude vehicle” included pilot-controlled thrusters, a paint-shaker to simulate the rumble of takeoff, and lots of flashing lights, dials, buttons and beeps.

Mini Golf Why shell out for someone else’s 18 holes? When faced with renovating a muddy backyard, one resourceful family built a mini golf course rather than spending thousands on plants and landscaping. The crafty dad created a 9-hole course using pea gravel, scrap lumber and carpet remnants. He even added solar lights for nighttime play.

Movie Theater Backyard theaters make for neighborhood summer blockbusters. Get an LCD or DLP projector, and find a place to put the screen. One California couple used PVC pipe to build a 15’ x 8’ vinyl screen right over their landscaped pool. What was their first movie-night feature? Jaws, of course!
