Are you in Good Hands?

When life is incredibly busy, carving out “me” time may seem like a luxury you can’t afford. Adding to the challenge: As the world becomes increasingly connected through technology, it’s harder to disconnect from work, your newsfeed, family obligations, and other distractions when you want to decompress. Luckily, there are simple, doable strategies that can help you maximize your “me” time.

Before anything else, embrace the idea of making “me” time a priority. While it doesn’t have to be all at once, try to dedicate 20 to 60 minutes every day to an activity you enjoy, and promise yourself you won’t skip it. Here are four ways to make that happen:

1. Become an early bird.

If you have young kids, consider setting your alarm 15 to 30 minutes earlier than usual so you can give yourself some quiet time to start the day. Relax and read the paper as you sip your coffee. Try doing some soothing stretches or breathing exercises.

2. Schedule regular treats.

At least once a month, make a plan to see a movie—or schedule a leisurely lunch with close friends. Treat it just as you would an important doctor’s visit or business appointment.

Did You Know?

42% of women in the U.S. report that they have less than an hour to themselves on any given day.

3. Make the most of found time.

Keep a journal, sketchbook or book in your purse or briefcase. Whenever you find yourself waiting at a doctor’s office, the airport, or in a long line somewhere, seize it as an opportunity to indulge in your chosen activity. Additionally, mobile apps have made it easier than ever to learn new skills such as speaking a new language.

4. Give yourself a digital curfew.

Designate a time at least an hour before bed to power down all electronic devices (including the TV). Use at least some of that time to read a (paper) book, take a bubble bath or engage in another relaxing activity. An added perk: Doing this will help set you up for a good night’s sleep.
